‘Cherry’ Addis was a towering figure for Finedon Dolben CC over many seasons, and his supporters felt he could have made a mark in county cricket had he chosen to make the game his profession. In 1923 he produced eye-catching figures of 7-19 in a losing cause against Northampton Saints (whose side could boast a former Northamptonshire skipper in ‘Punch’ Raven), prompting the local press to observe that the County ‘might with advantage pay some attention’ to him. But his first-class appearances were limited to two matches against Dublin University in 1924 and 1926, at Rushden and Northampton respectively. Opening the bowling as a left- arm spinner, he picked up four wickets on debut – earning selection to give Albert ‘Taffy’ Thomas a much-needed rest – and might have fared even better, according to one observer, ‘had the field work been what it ought to have been.’ He figured less prominently in his second game and wasn’t required again. Back in club cricket, Addis claimed all ten Wellingborough Town wickets (his victims including ‘Fanny’ Walden) for just 15 runs in 1932, and played regularly for Northamptonshire in wartime fixtures although by then he bowled very little. Away from cricket, he worked as a stitcher in the boot and shoe trade.
